The Road Less Traveled
Allen Johnson emancipated from foster care when he was 18. His social worker shook his hand before saying, “Don’t call me, there’s nothing I can do for you.” Johnson took the advice as a personal incentive to do everything for himself. In the fall 2008, he is entered his second year of law school, after finishing both masters and bachelors degrees in history. This resilient young man accomplished what some people only dream of. In addition to putting himself through school, Allen serves on the board of three major nonprofit organizations, and has been invited to speak across the country as a youth advocate. Yet, even with all this success, he relishes it alone. Allen will be the first to tell you how he would have loved to have even one person in the audience at his graduations. One can only hope he will have an audience as he graduates from law school.
Program Description
It’s Your Day Milestone Recognition is a program that pairs up foster youth with individuals and communities that will celebrate important milestones with them. The C4 Group has chosen to focus on birthdays, graduations, and weddings because these are significant events for youth in the target age range of 16 to 23. The purpose of It’s Your Day is to provide foster youth a place and community to celebrate these important life events with and to lay the foundation for what will hopefully develop into long-term relationships. Host individuals and groups can celebrate these important milestones with youth by simply attending the event, planning a celebration, or even through festivities that they already do every year.
By putting time, talent, and treasure into celebrating these events with foster youth, your local It’s Your Day program will truly invest positive influence into their lives. This program has the ability to be a signature effort for your organization that will bring about positive impact.
